JTTF MAKE ARREST IN UCSD HOAX BOMB INVESTIGATION

On Saturday, December 8, 2007, at approximately 6:00am, members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) arrested Timothy Bryon Kalka, age 50, of San Diego, California, in connection with the University of California San Diego (UCSD) hoax bomb incident on Wednesday, December 5, 2007.

Kalka was arrested pursuant to a federal arrest warrant signed by a U.S. Magistrate Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of California. The federal arrest warrant charged Kalka with one count of violating Title 18, United States code, Section 1038, which makes it illegal to provide false information or engage in hoax activities pertaining to explosives.

On Thursday, December 6, 2007, a copy of a recorded message and letter obtained under this investigation was released to the media. In response to this release on Friday, December 7, 2007, the JTTF received information from individuals who watched and listened to local television and radio broadcasts.

Based on the above information and additional investigation conducted by the JTTF an arrest warrant was sought and approved by a Federal U.S. Magistrate Judge, for Kalka's arrest. Kalka is a former lab technician who worked at the Leichtag Biomedical Research Building, the location of the hoax bomb incident. Kalka was terminated by UCSD on November, 30, 2007.

Kalka will be booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center, 808 Union Street, San Diego, California. Kalka is expected to have an initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Monday, December 10, 2007, in San Diego, California.

The case will be prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office in San Diego, California.

An arrest warrant is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the Government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
