JTTF Releases U.S. Courthouse Pipe Bomb Explosion Video

On Friday, May 9, 2008, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) released a portion of the video tape depicting the pipe bomb explosion at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 940 Front Street, San Diego, California. The video being released depicts the explosion from the inner lobby area of the building.

By way of background, on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at approximately 1:40 a.m., an explosion occurred at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 940 Front Street, San Diego, California. Shortly after the explosion the San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) and San Diego Police Department responded to the building.

Shortly after the explosion investigators from the JTTF and the FBI Evidence Response Team (ERT) responded to the scene and started to coordinate this investigation. The FBI ERT collected evidence from the front and inside of the building. Evidence was also collected from the area between Broadway and Front to Broadway and Second Street.

Earlier this week evidence collected from the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse crime scene was submitted for examination and analyses to the FBI Laboratory Explosives Unit at Quantico, Virginia.

The JTTF continues to actively and aggressively pursue all leads in this investigation. The JTTF requests anyone that was in the area of the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and Courthouse, 940 Front Street, San Diego, California, late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning to report any suspicious activity to the JTTF.

Approximately 100 law enforcement and fire department personnel have been involved since the investigation began. This investigation is being led by the JTTF. The mission of the JTTF is to protect San Diego and Imperial Counties, the United States, and American citizens from potential terrorist attacks.
