Ocean Beach Man Arrested as a Result of “Big Boy Bandit” Bank Robbery Investigations

Keith Slotter, Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego FBI Office, announces the arrest of Stephen Colburn, age 54 of San Diego, California.

Colburn was arrested on Monday, January 26, 2009, at approximately 2:00 p.m. by San Diego Police Department Officers, and members of the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force. Colburn was arrested in the 4900 block of Santa Monica in Ocean Beach. Colburn was arrested without incident and subsequently booked into the San Diego County Jail.

Earlier in the day, employees at a bank in Mission Valley observed what they believed to be suspicious activity. The employees provided a description of Colburn and a vehicle license plate which led to the identification of Colburn.

The “Big Boy Bandit” is believed to be responsible for 17 bank robberies starting in 2004 through 2008. The last robbery occurred on November 17, 2008.

Anyone with information concerning the “Big Boy Bandit” robberies is asked to contact the FBI at telephone number (858) 565-1255, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. You may remain anonymous by calling either telephone number.

An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the Government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
